Child Development for CDA & Assessment Preparation

Prepare for your Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential™ in as little as 10 weeks with us! Local Correctional Officer Training Academy

Correctional Officers are responsible for supervising prisoners, enforcing rules, and maintaining security in local correctional facilities. Delta College’s 160 Hour Correctional Officer Training Academy is approved by the Michigan Sheriffs’ Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC) and will fulfill the training requirement to becoming a Local Correctional Officer. Because the work of correctional officers involves many security-related situations, including potentially violent ones, employers may favor applicants with law enforcement or military experience. You’ll learn about ethics, safety precautions, and crisis management, as well as self-defense techniques.

Entry Requirement

MSCTC Standards
To enter the Corrections Academy, you must meet the Standards established by the Michigan Sheriffs' Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC).  Delta College offers the Pre-Employment reading/writing and physical fitness tests for your convenience. They are required prior to enrollment in the program.

The minimum standards are:

  • Age - not less than 18 years old
  • United States citizenship
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Possess a valid operator's license
  • No prior felony convictions

Application Deadline
In order to secure your position in the next academy, your application must be completed by the due date listed below. The sooner, the better. On average, it takes about four weeks to complete all the application requirements. If you are seeking financial aid and/or a loan, you must have proper documentation outlining your approval amounts.

Complete the  Corrections Academy Application Process. This includes the MSCTC pre-enrollment tests(Due by November 15, 2017)

Step 4
Interview, scheduled by our office (Due by November 30, 2017)

Step 5
Register with LifeLong Learning & Pay (Due by December 5, 2017)

Late applicants or anyone not meeting these deadlines will have their eligibility to attend the Academy determined on a case by case basis.
