A Message From the President: Delta and Diversity
Delta College "Walks the Talk" when it comes to incorporating Diversity into every aspect of our College’s culture. Delta has always maintained a welcoming environment that encompasses acceptance and respect, and must continue this openness in to our future. We understand, and appreciate, that each person is unique and has individual differences. The culture of Diversity is not an "extra" thing to observe or add to our workload but, rather, is integral to Delta College’s mission, vision, and strategic initiatives.
A few of the indicators of success in the areas of Diversity at Delta are demonstrated, through acknowledgments of excellence, by our employees. Delta College is among nine two-year institutions receiving Honor Roll recognition in the 2009 "Great Colleges to Work For" competition announced by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The "Great Colleges to Work For" survey recognizes colleges, based on enrollment size, for specific best practices and policies, such as compensation and benefits, work environment, and institutional policies. People make the difference at Delta College. This survey confirms that our employees are very unique individuals, dedicated to creating an environment in which everyone – staff, students and the community – can contribute and succeed. An inclusive attitude creates an energy and enthusiasm that is truly unique and rewarding for all of us.
Delta College was recently awarded the highly competitive Title III Federal Grant for $1.5 million dollars to focus on student retention. Delta College has always had a reputation for personal attention, which is the key to retention. An integrated retention system will allow us to expand and comprehensively measure our success in assisting students to stay in school – especially developmental, online, first-generation, and at-risk students.
Diversity is a critical part of our current 2008 to 2011 Strategic Plan. As with many strategic plans, certain initiatives are accomplished and new ones take their place, but when Delta looks at Diversity, we see a constant work in progress. Just as our ability to ensure Student Success will never reach finality, so is the case for our efforts to improve upon Diversity. We will continue to work toward a robust culture of inclusion.
