Financial Aid Office

Appeals

1.     Students not maintaining Standards of Academic Progress for Financial Aid Recipients receive notification of financial aid denial from the Financial Aid Office. This notification is sent via email to the student’s Delta College email account. Students denied financial aid for this reason have the right to appeal for future financial aid. Mitigating circumstances which can be shown to have adversely impacted academic success must be documented. Circumstances beyond the reasonable control of students, such as injury or illness, death of a family member, or other special circumstances may be grounds for successful appeals.

The Financial Aid Probation Appeal Form can be obtained in the Financial Aid Office or online. It is the student’s responsibility to complete this form. Faculty and staff members will not do so on a student’s behalf. The inclusion of appropriate supporting documentation is necessary. Incomplete appeals will be denied. Appeal requests must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office according to the following schedule:

Fall Semester Financial Aid Probation Appeals

Accepted from May 1 through August 1

Winter Semester Financial Aid Probation Appeals

Accepted from October 1 through December 1

Spring-Summer Semester Financial Aid Probation Appeals

Accepted from February 1 through April 1

After reviewing the appeal request, the Standards of Academic Progress Appeals Committee will convey their decision via the student’s Delta College email account.

o    If a financial aid probation appeal is approved, a student will receive an additional semester of aid provided that the student enrolls only in approved courses listed on his/her academic plan. Students on financial aid probation must EITHER:

A.   Complete all courses in which they register with grades of C (2.0) or better (no C-, D+, D, D-, F, or NC grades), and with no withdrawals (W or WI) or Incompletes (I),

OR

B.   Once again meet the Delta College Standards of Academic Progress for Financial Aid Recipients.

o    At the end of the semester, student progress and compliance with probation conditions will be checked. If students have met the Standards of Academic Progress for Financial Aid Recipients requirements, aid will once again be awarded and the student will receive notification that he or she is no longer on financial aid probation.

If students have not met these Standards, but have met the conditions stated above, further aid will be granted on a probational semester-by semester basis. Student progress and compliance with probation conditions will continue to be checked at the end of each semester before aid is awarded for the next semester to ensure that students are continuing to progress academically. This process will continue until the student once again meets Standards of Academic Progress for Financial Aid Recipients or until the student reaches the end of his/her academic plan.

If it should be found that the student has not met financial aid probation conditions during one of these probational semesters, aid will be denied and the student will have to attend at his/her own expense until Standards of Academic Progress for Financial Aid Recipients requirements are once again met.

2.       If an initial financial aid probation appeal request is denied by the Standards of Academic Progress Appeals Committee, a student may submit a second appeal request. Second Financial Aid Probation Appeal Forms may be obtained in the Financial Aid Office or online. In general, a second appeal should contain additional information and/or documentation that was not presented as part of the initial appeal. Second appeal requests are reviewed during the first week of each month by the Director of Financial Aid. The Director will inform a student of his decision, via the student’s Delta College email account. If a second financial aid probation appeal is denied, a student must provide evidence of academic improvement before a subsequent appeal will be considered.
