Laying the groundwork for success

Office life is not for Jaden Pavlawk. After taking a skilled trades class in high school, he decided he wanted to find a career that would allow him to work with his hands to build things.

His aspirations brought him to Delta College, where he found the perfect fit in the construction management program.

Jaden said he chose Delta because it’s close to home and the class options fit his busy schedule. He works for a local cabinet making company, and will often schedule his classes after work.

“I didn’t really see myself at a big university and when I’m not in class, I’m working, so finding a college close to home was important,” he said.

Jaden can often be found in the construction lab – his favorite spot on campus. A close second is the library.

“I have almost every tool that I need at my disposal to build and make products in the lab. Plus, there are plenty of people who are around to help and support you,” he said.

One of those people is Andrew Neumann, instructor of residential construction. Jaden recalls one of his favorite experiences was pouring concrete at a local high school as part of Neumann’s class. Jaden participated in the entire process, from mixing to pouring to finishing.

“Hands-on learning is important to me, so to be able to go out into the field and experience a real-life job meant a lot to me,” he said.

Jaden is a recipient of a President’s Honor Scholarship, an academic-based scholarship for graduating high school seniors from Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties. It covers two years of tuition, fees and books. He’s also a member of the Honors Program.

He said he’s grateful for the scholarship that helped him get to Delta, but it’s up to him to succeed.

“College makes you accountable,” he said. “It’s up to you to pick your classes and schedule your time. I recommend Delta because it’s a smart option. You can come here to not only learn, but to plan a successful future and find the steps needed to get there.”

After Jaden completes the construction management program, he plans to pursue an electrician apprenticeship.
