3.035 Teaching Load Distribution for Full-Time Faculty

    1. Faculty Teaching Schedule
      1. By the twelfth week of the Winter semester, a Faculty member's annual teaching load distribution schedule for the following academic year* will be prepared and agreed upon by the Faculty member and the academic Associate Dean, in accordance with guidelines established by a majority vote of the full-time Faculty in that Division, approved by the academic Associate Dean, and reviewed by the Academic Dean, and on file in the Division and Senate offices. At least one week prior to the beginning of classes, the Faculty member must be assigned a firm schedule unless mutual agreement is made to waive this time requirement.
*The academic/fiscal year begins July 1 and ends June 30 (Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring).
      2. In the event of an unforeseen change in load distribution, an alternate plan will be developed by the academic Associate Dean and Faculty member, with the approval of the Academic Dean. Cancellations will not affect the Faculty member’s annual contract salary, unless the Faculty member refuses to accept an alternate assignment.
    2. Laboratory teaching hours will be equated at 1.0/1.0.
    3. Equated Hours
      1. The usual annual teaching load will be thirty equated hours for two semesters (Fall and Winter) but does not preclude a mutually agreed upon alternate distribution of load. Supplemental salary will be paid for hours in excess of thirty equated hours for two or more semesters or in excess of fifteen equated hours for any one semester unless other arrangements have been approved.  Courses taught in the Summer session (July-August) will be considered to be supplemental employment and therefore not part of the thirty equated hour teaching load unless they are part of an alternate distribution plan previously requested by the Faculty member and academic Associate Dean and approved by the Academic Dean.
      2. Variations in how equated hours are to be determined may exist. The academic Associate Dean, the Academic Dean, the Chief Academic Officer, and Human Resources Office will make every effort to ensure that any formula used to calculate equated hours will maintain equity among Faculty within the discipline, in the Division, and across the Academic Divisions.  Variations may be made if agreed upon by the Faculty member, academic Associate Dean, and Academic Dean.
      3. Any agreement must be signed within five working days of the verbal agreement by all three parties involved. Such agreements are subject to review by the Human Resources Office and the Faculty Salary Committee for consistency, fairness, and equitability in compensation matters.  Documentation will be filed in the Human Resources Office and in the Division Office.
    4. The responsibility for scheduling individual teaching assignments lies with the academic Associate Dean. The load distribution of a Faculty member may consist of credit producing courses and programs and/or non-credit producing activities approved on a released time basis. Any non-academic assignment must be approved by the appropriate Executive Staff member as well as the appropriate academic staff member.
    5. In special circumstances, a Faculty member may teach a reduced number of hours during a contract year for reduced pay. Any reduction in teaching load for the contract year is subject to the approval of the academic Associate Dean and the Academic Dean.  Salary will be computed based on x/30 of the regular salary where x represents the total number of equated hours.  All benefits will remain intact unless load falls below twenty equated hours in a contract year.
    6. In assigning teaching loads and distribution of hours in schedules consistent with institutional needs, emphasis will be given to meeting the needs of students and the professional growth, creative work, and physical well-being of the Faculty member.
    7. An appeal may be filed for issues of implementation of the policy. Appeals would be appropriate if implementation of this policy is considered in violation under IIIA, IIIB, and/or VI. Before a formal appeal is filed, the Faculty member, academic Associate Dean and Academic Dean will meet to try to reach a resolution acceptable to all parties.  If an acceptable resolution is not reached, an appeal may be made by a Faculty member, an academic Associate Dean, or an Academic Administrator to a committee to be known as the Ad Hoc Faculty Teaching Load Distribution Appeals Committee. The committee will be composed of two academic Associate Deans and two Faculty members appointed by the Faculty Executive Committee and one member of the AP Staff and one member of the Support Staff, appointed by the SEB. The request for an appeal must be made to the Faculty Executive Committee within thirty calendar days from the time the appellant becomes aware of or should have become aware of the event which gave rise to the appeal. The total appeal process must be completed within thirty calendar days from the date of file with the Faculty Executive Committee.

This policy will be reviewed in September of 2020.
