3.060 Division and Faculty Initiated Formative Evaluations of Full Time Faculty

Intent Statement
The College recognizes that while a faculty member’s primary responsibility is teaching effectiveness, maintaining and improving teaching effectiveness involves a variety of responsibilities and methods.  Some of these methods may include attending professional conferences, productive activities at the college and/or in the community, appropriate assessment/evaluation from students, and collegial interactions with associates.  The purpose of this policy is to assist faculty members in successfully achieving these responsibilities.

    1. Annual Review Schedule – Using college-approved student feedback forms and other division approved methods, faculty members will consult annually with the academic Associate Dean regarding the fulfillment of the following responsibilities:
      • Teaching effectiveness
      • Professional development
      • Productive activities
      • Collegiality
        1. The annual consultation process will be used when applicable, unless either the individual faculty member or the academic Associate Dean deems there is a need for a more comprehensive evaluation. New faculty will be observed teaching annually during their first two years.
        2. Regardless of rank, faculty are comprehensively evaluated at least every fifth year, as per the procedures in Section II.
        3. A completed promotion and/or tenure packet filed with the faculty member’s academic Associate Dean supersedes Sections A and B.
        4. All evaluations will be discussed with the individual faculty member and become part of the division personnel file with written verification of completion filed with the Academic Services Office and Human Resources.
    2. Comprehensive Five -Year Faculty Evaluations will:
      1. Incorporate a review, including classroom observation(s), using college-approved student feedback forms and other division approved methods regarding the fulfillment of the following responsibilities:
        • Teaching effectiveness
        • Professional development
        • Productive activities
        • Collegiality
      2. Be conducted by the academic Associate Dean of the faculty member being evaluated, unless either the individual faculty member or academic Associate Dean elects to have a peer review committee. If a peer review committee is established, it will be comprised of a minimum of three members, one member chosen by the academic Associate Dean, one member chosen by the faculty member being evaluated, and the remaining member(s), preferably from outside the division, chosen by the two previously selected committee members.
      3. A completed promotion and/or tenure packet filed with the faculty member’s academic Associate Dean supersedes Sections A and B.
      4. All evaluations will be discussed with the individual faculty member and become part of the division personnel file with written verification of completion filed with the Academic Services Office and Human Resources.
    3. Optional Faculty Self-Initiated Self-Evaluation:
      1. Faculty are encouraged to conduct additional self-evaluations on a regular basis. Division members, the academic Associate Dean, academic administration and other college staff are encouraged to support and assist faculty in such self-evaluation.  The faculty member may choose whether or not to disclose the results of such self-evaluation.
      2. No information obtained in such self-evaluation may form part of any other evaluation under this policy nor be used in promotion, tenure, discipline, dismissal or other personnel action unless such self-evaluation is conducted in accordance with guidelines approved by the division and academic administration, and unless the faculty member, academic Associate Dean, dean of faculty and chief academic officer all agree that the methods and results of such self-evaluation have been collected, analyzed and stored in a manner which ensures their fairness, objectivity and accuracy.
    4. Issues arising that cannot be resolved through the normal evaluation process (Senate Policy 3.060) will be considered under Senate Policy 3.061 Academic Office Initiated Evaluations.

This policy must be reviewed in September 2020.
