The two largest planets in our solar system are in prime positions for observing, and the Delta College Planetarium is giving the public a chance to see them through telescopes. The evening will begin with Planetarium Manager, Mike Murray, presenting a free show in the Dome360 Theater to illustrate astronomical highlights in the current evening sky, with special emphasis on the planets Jupiter and Saturn. The program will include tips on how to observe the planets with the unaided eye, binoculars and telescopes.
Immediately following the program, and weather permitting, the planetarium will open its rooftop observation deck for viewers to get a close-up look at the most recognizable planets in our solar system. If the skies are cloudy, the 7pm show will run as scheduled and staff will provide some extra time in the theater for demonstrations.
“Jupiter is nearing its closest approach to Earth right now, shining like a brilliant star low in the east after dusk,” explains Murray. “Even though Saturn is twice as far away from us as Jupiter, it still shines as a moderately bright star with a steady light low in the south. Our telescopes are powerful enough to distinguish the rings and even some its moons.”
The sky-observing portion of the event is weather dependent, but the planetarium show will run rain or shine. Both the show and observing are free and open to the public.
