Delta College program spotlight: Automotive Service Technology

Delta College automotive students

Being an automotive service technician or mechanic is about more than just fixing cars. It’s about ensuring the safety of individuals and families inside those vehicles when they get back on the road.

If you are a detail-oriented problem solver who enjoys working with your hands, consider a career in a field that is always in demand—automotive service technology.

What do automotive technicians do?

Automotive service technicians inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair cars and light trucks. To perform well in today’s industry, technicians need to acquire a strong understanding of the technologies that are part of modern vehicles.

After training, service techs may choose to become generalists by working on a range of vehicles or continue their training to become specialists. Specialty areas may include hybrid and electric vehicle technology, undercar specialists, diagnostic technician and more.

“In our program, we also teach about the management structure of dealerships and shops because we don’t want to limit our students to just working on cars,” says Jay Wallace, instructor. “Maybe they want to become a service writer, a service manager or a fixed operations manager. They can even go into teaching or start their own shop.”

Why choose Delta?

The Delta College automotive service technology program meets industry standards for the ASE Education Foundation. This program prepares students for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification and to enter the field of automotive diagnosis and repair.

Small class sizes ensure students benefit from one-on-one learning experiences with expert instructors who are certified in their field. Delta provides tools for hands-on training in state-of-the-art labs, which are equipped with both late-model and new vehicles. Students will study everything from fundamentals to emerging technologies, including hybrid and electric vehicles.

“Having access to the professors has been amazing,” says Elijah Smith, student. “I can ask them any question, whether it’s in the class or with my personal car. They’re always there to help.”
