"The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them." - Ida B. Wells, American journalist

Journalism is more than reporting facts. It’s about uncovering truths, amplifying voices and shaping powerful narratives that make a real impact. Good journalists embody qualities like bravery, curiosity, honesty, integrity and adaptability. These traits empower journalists to ask hard questions and tell stories that entertain, inform and inspire.

Why journalism?

Journalism is the backbone of a healthy democracy and is often referred to as the “fourth estate” or an unofficial branch of the government. It holds power accountable, gives communities a voice and works to ensure citizens have access to accurate information.

Over the years, technology has transformed the way stories are told, opening doors to new platforms and creative possibilities. From podcasts to social media, today’s journalists have tools that amplify their reach and impact. “It’s an exciting time to be entering into media careers because technology, such as AI, is never going to replace human storytellers, but it is a tool that can really help students tell stories in new ways,” shares Crystal McMorris, professor.

Why choose Delta?

All students who complete the Journalism and Integrated Media program will take a variety of classes, from Media Literacy to Social Media & Communication, all designed to help each student understand the journalism industry, build a strong portfolio of work and network to help them land a job in a competitive market.

“The journalism world is very interconnected. When someone from a local publication reaches out to a professor to ask, ‘Who would you recommend?’ I think the professors getting to see what your skill set is makes a recommendation more likely to happen,” shares Mikaila Bluew, student. “They’re more likely to send you out, to give you networking opportunities and help you hone your craft, which is important in this competitive field.”

Students get hands-on industry experience, including photography, videography, illustration, graphic design, news writing, interviewing and more by working on Delta’s award-winning, student-led newspaper, the Delta Collegiate. Delta College is also one of only a handful of community colleges to house PBS and NPR broadcasting networks. Students in our Journalism & Integrated Media program also have opportunities to write and record stories and gain mentorships from staff at these stations.

Students receive a well-rounded education in areas they’re most interested in exploring—choosing from three tracks to guide their experience. On the news and information track, they’ll develop skills in reporting and news writing and editing skills for the digital age. On the visual journalism track, they’ll focus on photojournalism, web and print design and multi-media content. On the fast-growing public relations track, they’ll learn how to use a variety of mediums to promote companies, candidates, organizations and individuals.
