“I’m very curious about how things work,” shares Felicia Peters, professor. “I used to love to take things apart as a kid just to figure out how to put them back together.” This curiosity is essential for those working in network administration.
Computer networks are often referred to as the “backbone” of modern communication. Network administrators oversee the setup, maintenance and security of an organization’s networks—ensuring everything runs smoothly. They continuously monitor systems to solve issues before they can become major problems. Though daily tasks may include routine maintenance, network administrators often face unexpected challenges, making each day unique.
The career prospects for network administrators are strong, with a median salary of $88,813 per year. As more companies and industries rely on digital infrastructure, the demand for skilled network administrators continues to grow.
“Network administration is crossing over into other industries, even the automotive industry,” says Peters. “You need to be able to troubleshoot the onboard computer system that’s in the car.”
The Network Administration program at Delta College has flexible class options available both online and in-person. “I love the small class sizes. I love the attentiveness of the professors,” says Nicole Knoll, student. “And I liked that we get hands-on experience with Cisco IOS, Red Hat Linux and different Microsoft Windows Server systems.”
Classes are led by instructors who have worked or currently work in the field, sharing invaluable experience-driven knowledge with their students. Delta’s focus on practical and trending application ensures that students are ready to succeed in the field.
