Want to start preparing now for the next job fair? Check out these resources!
First, when the registered employers list becomes available, look up some of the companies online to do some research. Do any of them stand out as a place you would like to work?
It is a good idea to maintain and update your résumé. Having a polished résumé can sometimes make or break your odds of getting the job! Here are some resources to bring your résumé up to par:
- Michigan Works! workshops
Attend an in person, online or pre-recorded workshop to improve your résumé, your interview skills or prepare you for the job fair. - Big Interview
Don't be fooled by it's name. Big Interview offers way more than interview tips (but you might need that too!). This online resource offers training in résumé and cover letter preparation.
Arrive early! Get the lay of the land and locate what employers you want to talk with. Keep an open mind for organizations you are unfamiliar with. They might have something perfect for you!
Want to look your best for the job fair, but don't have anything to wear? Check out Delta's Closet! Delta College students can shop free at the on-campus reuse store that provides gently used, professional clothing, at no cost to you.
Come up with a brief introduction of yourself. Include some of your past, positive work experience or skills, what you like about the company and why you would be interested in that company. You are marketing for yourself!
Side note: don't bring up salary or benefits at this point unless they talk about it first.
You can find the list of employers here. (Scroll to the green "Job Seekers" section and select "Search Employers".)
After you check out the list, you can research the companies you want to talk to. Knowing a little about a company can help you have more impactful converstions with employers.
Did employers tell you how to apply for positions you were interested in? Follow up and apply! If you have a recruiter's business card, let them know you submitted a job application—this shows you really do follow through!
The Great Lakes Bay Job Fair is a partnership between Delta College, the Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works!, the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity - Michigan Rehabilitation Services & Workforce Development - Veterans’ Employment Services and the American Legion Post #443.
