Academic Career Experience & Service Learning


 

 

The ACE Program is academic, which means that our Co-op and Internship Students Enroll in ACE Courses.   These courses appear on your transcript and are part of your permanent academic record.  

ACE courses teach students the soft skills required to be successful in their chosen career!

ACE 101W—Career Professional Development I

(2 credits)

This course is for first-semester co-op and internship students; students meet both face-to-face and online (CNET).

Coursework includes the following:
  • Determining employer’s expectations in the workplace
  • Writing employment goals with supervisor
  • Maintaining a reflective workplace journal
  • Researching worksite’s mission, vision, values, and culture
  • Communicating and networking professionally
  • Managing workplace conflict
  • Making ethical decisions


  • Improving team-building skills
  • Practicing oral presentation skills
  • Revising and improving resume
  • Creating a professional online image using LinkedIn
  • Managing time effectively by prioritizing work-related tasks
  • Reducing stress in the workplace
  • Writing an essay reflecting on co-op/internship experience

ACE 102W—Career Professional Development II

(2 credits)


 

This course is for second-semester co-op students, which continues from ACE 101W, including additional responsibilities at the worksite. Students meet online (INET). 


 
Coursework includes the following:
  • Writing employment goals with supervisor
  • Maintaining a reflective workplace journal
  • Exploring diversity in the workplace
  • Analyzing bullying in the workplace
  • Improving team-building skills in a virtual setting
  • Producing and exchanging professional communication 


  • Developing an online portfolio
  • Revising resume
  • Improving job interviewing skills
  • Completing a mock interview (telephone or online)
  • Changing jobs/careers and leaving a job
  • Writing an essay reflecting on work experience


ACE 201W—Career Work Experience (Business & Human Services)

ACE 202W—Career Work Experience (Communications & Sciences)

ACE 203W—Career Work Experience (Health)

ACE 204W—Career Work Experience (Technical & Industrial)

(2 credits)


(Note:  After successfully completing 6 ACE credits, you qualify for the "ACE Certificate of Achievement."  Use code CBZ.35100 when completing your graduation application.)
 

This course is for second-year co-op students, which continues from Career Professional Development II, including additional responsibilities at the worksite. Students meet online. 

Coursework includes the following:
  • Writing employment goals with supervisor
  • Participating in online discussions with fellow co-op students reflecting on work experience
  • Completing online portfolio
  • Writing an essay summarizing continuous improvements resulting from the Academic Career Experience program
