Students are talking...

"I would recommend this class to any of my family/friends for their first time riding experience. I can't thank the coaches enough! They were my inspiration and honestly I don't know if I would of succeeded without them! I will take all of this knowledge out on the real roads and always remember them! Thanks again Delta for putting on such a great learning experience!"

Motorcycle Program

Delta College sponsors a Motorcycle Safety program in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Education. Upon successful completion of our state-approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, the Secretary of State may waive the riding skills test required for a cycle endorsement.  In addition, you must take a Motorcycle Safety course if you fail the state skills test twice or if you are under 18 years of age.

Delta College currently has 20 nationally certified MSF Rider Coaches on staff. Their instruction experience ranges from 1-19 years. All are veteran riders, some with over 40 years of riding experience. This spring and summer Delta College LifeLong Learning will be offering courses in Motorcycle Novice and Returning Rider.

Requirements for Motorcycle Safety & Experienced Rider Courses:
  1. Driver’s license, if 15 years of age - permit & waiver form (on website).
  2. D.O.T. approved helmet.*
  3. Long pants only - no shorts (jeans are suggested).
  4. Boots - no high heels or tennis shoes (ankles must be covered).
  5. Eye protection - goggles or face shield are recommended. Prescription glasses, shatterproof safety glasses and sunglasses are acceptable due to the low speeds on the course.
  6. Gloves - fitted and full fingered (leather is suggested).

Failure to bring any of these materials will prohibit you from participating in class.

*Delta College acknowledges that the State of Michigan's motorcycle helmet law has changed, but it is still a requirement to wear a D.O.T. approved helmet while participating in any Motorcycle Safety Foundation course.

Standby Registration Process for Motorcycle Safety

Due to an overwhelming response, we may have limited space in our Motorcycle Safety Courses. However, there are instances where students are unable to attend the course and a seat may become available for “Standby Registration.”

Potential standby students need to report to the preferred class session approximately 15 minutes before the class start and identify themselves to the instructor as a “standby student” (Report to Room S-225 or S-226). While it’s hard to predict how many no-shows there will be and also how many standby students will show up, the instructor will register standbys into unfilled seats. There are no guarantees for entry – if we have more standby students than no shows, the instructor will draw 50/50 tickets to determine which students are admitted. Note: If registered on standby, the $25.00 course fee is due on the first day of class (cash or check only). If you have questions regarding this process please call (989) 686-9444.

2014 Motorcycle Novice Schedule

Course Number: CMR-1010
Cost: $25 (non-transferable, non-refundable)
Location: All Motorcycle classes are held in rooms S-225 & S-226 on Delta's Main Campus and the driving ranges

Motorcycle Novice is offered as part of the LifeLong Learning Spring/Summer programming.  For more information or to request a course catalog, please contact LifeLong Learning at (989) 686-9444 or lifelonglearning@delta.edu.

The Novice course is required for anyone who wishes to obtain a motorcycle endorsement. This course is designed for riders with little or no riding experience, but who wish to become familiar with motorcycle rules and regulations, and develop skills to become confident riders. You must be at least 15 years of age with a drivers permit and able to ride a two-wheel bicycle. This class focuses on the development of the basic riding skills: turning, shifting and braking. In this course you will receive approximately 20 hours of instruction, including 6 in the classroom and 14 on the range. Motorcycles are provided by Delta College.

On average, the Delta College Motorcycle Program trains over 650 students each year! Delta College currently has 20 nationally certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Coaches on staff. Their instruction experience ranges from 1-19 years.  All are veteran riders, some with over 40 year of experience.
