A Practical Guide To Infuse Information Literacy Into Your Course

 

According to the American Library Association Presidential Committee on Information Literacy:

    • "Information literate people are those who have learned how to learn. They know how to learn because they know how knowledge is organized, how to find information and how to use information in such a way that others can learn from them. They are people prepared for lifelong learning, because they can always find the information needed for any task or decision at hand."
    • As educators we can promote information literacy and lifelong learning.

Have You Considered These Questions?

    • Can information literacy be infused into any content, my content?
    • What basic information literacy skills do my students have when they enter my classroom and how does that affect their performance?
    • What is preventing my students from getting an "A" on information-based activities?
    • How can I assess my information literacy outcomes?
    • How can I assess my students' information literacy abilities?
    • How can I incorporate the use of the library's resources into my assignments?
    • What interventions could I offer my students to increase their success?

Possible Interventions

    • You can collaborate with librarians on available resources and using the research process when creating your assignments using the library's resources will be easier for your students if you know which resources will best answer their information questions - librarians have created a "Teaching Aides"  notebook containing samples of "good" assignments - a collection of faculty designed assignments are available in the instruction room.

Resources

    • Let your information needs be known.
    • Work with librarians on purchasing and maintaining a valuable collection
    • Acquaint yourself with current library resources.
    • The library's homepage contains information on services and resources available: materials request form, interlibrary loan form, access to online resources, and teaching aides and research help.

Instruction 

    • Schedule time for students to use the library - library instruction can be tailored to your needs.
    • Your students can be introduced to available library resources and the NAiLED research process.
    • Use librarian created instructional modules that will help your students learn to use various resources.
    • Your students can get group instruction on how to use specific library resources.
    • Handouts, pathfinders, bibliographies are available to you and your students - helpful videos can be viewed by your students, either individually or as a class, including "Navigating the Sea of Information", "Essential Skills for the Information Age: The Big 6 in Action", "Library Research : Where Do I Start?" introductions to the research process.

Assignments

    • Collaborate with librarians on available resources and using the research process when creating your assignments.
    • Using the library's resources will be easier for your students if you know which resources will best answer their information questions.
    • Librarians have created a "Teaching Aides" notebook containing samples of good assignments.
    • A collection of faculty designed assignments are available at the Reference Desk.

Assessments

    • Assessing student abilities before giving an assignment that requires the use of library resources will help you determine students' prior knowledge.
    • Assessing student abilities after instruction or an activity will help you determine what your students have learned.
    • You will be better equipped to keep track of your students' progress.
    • Librarians have developed assessments to measure information literacy skills.
