Dual Enrollment at Delta Helps Alina Alam Get Ready for New York
Alina Alam has dreamed about going to New York University since she was in seventh grade. She’s making it a reality this fall after getting a taste of college as a dual enrollment student at Delta College.
“I definitely think dual enrollment at Delta helped me prepare for NYU,” said Alam, who received her International Baccalaureate diploma at Saginaw Heritage High School after her junior year. She then chose to dual enroll at Delta in her senior year of high school. “I learned better time management skills and study skills. Delta has really helped me think big and set the stage for what is yet to come. I’m excited for university life.”
While Alam’s ultimate goal is to become a surgeon, she plans to begin by majoring in English literature and minoring in biology.
“Taking those classes at Delta helped me solidify my decision to go into the medical field,” said Alam, who was still able to participate in most high school activities as a dual enrollment student. “They gave me a really good introduction to what classes will be like in college and in medical school. I want to major in English to start, because not only do I love it, but the classes I took at Delta and that I plan to take at NYU, will help me connect to people and understand their stories (as a surgeon).”
Along with the small class sizes and variety of class offerings, Alam says her classes allowed her to interact with some great professors who helped open her eyes to new ways of thinking.
“I think there are so many choices and connections that you can make here at Delta,” said Alam. “It gave me the opportunity to explore classes, myself and my interests. That has given me more options about what I might want to do with my future.”
Why should your teen dual enroll?
Save money
In many cases the high school will pay for your dual enrollment courses. If you do have to pay, Delta’s tuition is much lower than other colleges.
Save time
Dual enrollment courses can be taken for both high school and college credit, giving students a head start when they graduate.
Be challenged
College classes are more challenging than traditional high school courses. Many high school students are ready for that.
Experience College
Dual enrollment students can participate in campus activities and discussions, opening their eyes to new cultures and experiences.
