One room schoolhouse in Millington

Delta College’s WDCQ-TV has been producing local documentaries since 2005 that inspire, educate and inform.

Programs have included veteran-orientated programs on World War II and the Korean War, along with many other programs focused on the region’s lumbering history, railroads and early immigrants. In 2018, the station produced “VIETNAM VOICES: Mid-Michigan Remembers the Vietnam War.” This award-winning documentary featured 31 local individuals who reflect back on their personal experiences during the volatile Vietnam War era.

WDCQ-TV’s Latest Local Documentary

WDCQ-TV’s most recent documentary, “Mid-Michigan Remembers,” highlights some of our area’s unique people and places. The premiere episode features an interesting trio of stories sure to excite history buffs.

Among the stories is one on how students walked a mile or more to one-room school houses in Millington. Another focuses on the Drake House in Breckenridge, which has been preserved as a country doctor’s home and office from the early 1900s to the 1950s. Dr. Drake was a jack of all trades who treated wounds, delivered babies, and practiced surgery, optometry and dentistry.

Another story comes from the days before the advent of four-lane highways, when travelers drove through small towns, often stopping at quirky roadside attractions like Spikehorn’s Bear Den and Wildlife Park, located just south of Harrison, Michigan.

“Mid-Michigan Remembers” is available on Q-TV Passport, the station’s video-on-demand service. To find out more about the station and its programs, or to sign up for Q-TV Passport, visit deltabroadcasting.org or call 877-472-7677.

Blood Sugar Rising

WDCQ-TV is partnering with Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw to address the alarming increases in diabetes nationally and in the Great Lakes Bay Region. PBS will air the national program “Blood Sugar Rising” next April. Locally, WDCQ-TV will focus on diabetes prevention programs. The station is producing a 30-minute documentary to coincide with the PBS program featuring the stories of three local individuals and families living and struggling with this critical health issue. The station will also partner with Ascension St. Mary’s in hosting a free one-day community health event to coincide with the program premiere.
