Answering the Call to Serve
Bonnie Kanicki

Job with Campus Police Leads to Distinguished Career

Born and raised in Bay City, Bonnie Kanicki began thinking about a career in law enforcement after taking a career aptitude test as a high school sophomore.

“One of the results of the career path testing was law enforcement,” said Kanicki. “That sparked my interest. I knew the job involved helping people, working outside and kind of being a leader. All that appealed to me.”

As she explored her college options, Delta seemed to be the best fit. “I knew Delta College had a law enforcement curriculum and I didn’t want to go to a big university. Plus, I was an athlete and I was able to play both basketball and softball at Delta,” Kanicki said.

Just weeks into her first semester at Delta, Kanicki made another decision that would launch her career as a police officer.

“I applied and was hired as a student service officer for Delta’s campus police. It was my first exposure to actually being in a uniform,” said Kanicki. “I will forever be grateful to Delta for giving me a chance.”

“I got my associate’s degree and transferred on to Ferris State University to get my bachelor’s. From there I was hired by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office,” added Kanicki. “But I always credit Delta with giving me a great start. It gave me confidence. Coming to Delta as an 18-year-old and working here was a very important part of my development and growth.”

She’s returned to Delta College many times over the years.

“I was often asked to be a guest speaker in criminal justice classes and I had the great honor of being the keynote speaker at a Police Academy Graduation Ceremony. My speech’s theme was, ‘answering the call to serve,’” Kanicki said.

Kanicki retired in October of 2018 as an inspector with the Michigan State Police after 31 years at multiples ranks and capacities. “I had been blessed with so many opportunities, but it was time,” she said of her career.

Always someone to stay busy, retirement didn’t last long for Kanicki. Earlier this month she was named Saginaw County’s new animal control director.
