Although Harmanjot Chauhan just finished eighth grade, she already knows exactly what she wants to be.
The soon-to-be high schooler has been able to get a head start on her college plan thanks to the Possible Dream program at Delta, which aims to keep college on the forefront of students’ minds through cultural and educational activities that are offered through their senior year.
“I want to be a doctor,” said Chauhan, from Midland. “I love helping people, especially when they’re hurt.”
Chauhan was inspired by her older brother, Manjot. He explored physician assistant studies as a possible career choice before deciding on law enforcement.
“He would tell me and my family about all of the cool things he learned in his science classes, and that really motivated me,” she said.
Chauhan entered the Possible Dream program in seventh grade, and hasn’t looked back.
The ultimate goal of the program is for all participants to graduate from high school
and go on to college. Chauhan plans to attend Delta College
or Michigan State University.
Lynn Hoerauf, coordinator of Possible Dream, said Chauhan is an active and treasured member of the program.
“With Harman’s great personality, determination and persistence, I believe she can do anything she sets her mind to,” Hoerauf said. “She is a bright light and I’m so thankful to have her part of the Possible Dream program.”
Some of Chauhan’s favorite activities have been seeing the Blue Man Group perform at the Midland Center for the Arts and going on a field trip to see a holiday performance in Saginaw. Another favorite experience was attending a three-day camp at Delta to learn about the college experience.
“Thank you to the supporters of Possible Dream for this opportunity,” said Chauhan. “I’ve met so many good friends, and it has been an amazing experience so far.”
In total, 420 students from Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties are participating in Possible Dream this year. Since 1998, more than 2,380 students have been part of the program.
