Join Astrophysicist Dr. Gregory Wirth for a public discussion and exploration into the creation of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope on Friday, November 3, at 7pm at the Delta College Planetarium.
Attendees will delve into the extraordinary discoveries made by the telescope, designed
to conduct infrared astronomy, from unveiling the secrets of nearby planets to unlocking
the mysteries of the most distant galaxies.
This captivating event will explore the cutting-edge technologies behind the telescope,
the individuals who made it possible and the high-resolution images from the telescope
projected in all their
glory on Delta College’s state-of-the-art planetarium dome.
Wirth, a native of Midland and 1985 H. H. Dow High School graduate, witnessed a partial
solar eclipse in his childhood that began his lifelong fascination with astronomy.
He attended Northwestern University and later received his Ph.D. in astronomy and
astrophysics from the University of California. Wirth currently serves as an astronomer
and systems engineer for
Ball Aerospace, a leading American aerospace company with a significant history of
contributing
to astrophysics missions like Hubble, Spitzer and
Deep Impact.
