Kindness is a treasure. If you have a little, give a little.

Walter and Carol Weinlander were married in 1973 and remained bonded through their five children, their philanthropical spirits and their commitment to community. Both gave freely, not only through gifts of monetary value, but of their time, talent and their most valued treasure—kindness.

Walter and Carol Weinlander

“[Kindness] is something everyone can give.” Carol often remarked. “So, it shouldn’t be in short supply.

Walt’s CPA firm, Weinlander Fitzhugh, recently celebrated 80 years of service and also operates on an established philosophy of giving: “Weinlander Fitzhugh believes in giving back to the community. Therefore, our team members are involved in many facets of the community. We feel it is necessary to contribute significantly to our community’s economic and civic growth.”

Walt lived by that philosophy every day until his passing on October 5, 2019.

Carol and Walt initially began giving to Delta College in 2014 in the form of three scholarships for nursing students, which were distributed annually. They read and re-read thank you letters from their scholarship recipients and felt proud of each student’s success as if they were their own grandchildren. Their last three checks for those scholarships were received by Delta
just two days after Carol’s passing on March 1, 2022.

Another favorite phrase of Carol’s was, “If you have a little extra, why not give a little extra?” In their estate planning, a sizable donation was reserved for the Delta College Foundation to help students who may be pursuing any of a broad range of majors, on their way to a college degree from Delta College. The Weinlanders’ legacy of kindness will live on, for generations to come, in the Walter G. and Carol A. Weinlander Scholarship Endowment.
