Christopher Weakley has been named head coach of the Delta College men’s basketball team. He began his new role in mid-November.
Weakley, a native of Decatur, Alabama, comes to Delta with more than 20 years of athletics experience at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He holds bachelor’s degrees in criminal law and sports management from the University of Illinois and Salem International University, respectively.
“I’m looking forward to preparing my athletes for whatever their future holds and helping them work towards their degree,” said Weakley. “Winning on the court is great, but winning in the classroom is just as important. I’m excited to see what these men achieve as they proceed to continuously work hard on and off the court.”
Weakley played for the New York Mets for three years and served as a professional international coach and player for the World League Basketball. In 2007, he was a free agent for the Los Angeles Clippers. Before playing professionally, Weakley was named a high school and college All-American in basketball and baseball.
Dionne McCollum, director of Athletics and Student Development for Delta, said Weakley presented a strong plan for the development of student athletes.
“Chris had everything that we were looking for in a head coach,” McCollum said. “In every interview, Chris’ passion made him stand out from the rest. He will help our athletic program, as a whole, become better and we are honored to have him join our Pioneer family.”
The men's basketball season will kick off on January 26 at Wayne County Community College.
