Hundreds of students throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region have pledged to fight bullying during Delta College Public Media’s first annual Stand Up to Bullying Campaign, which will conclude December 1 with several celebratory events.
The celebration will include a craft pick up event from 5:30-6:30pm at the Arnold Center in Midland for anyone to drive up and take activities home to complete. A virtual gallery that features a collection of artwork and showpieces from area artists can be accessed online via the Facebook event page.
“Delta College Public Media’s mission is to engage with our community and to provide programming and services that educate and inspire,” said Thomas Bennett, general manager of Delta College Public Media. “By helping to eliminate all forms of bullying, we can make our community a better place to live, work and grow for everyone.”
The campaign, which kicked off in late October, partnered with dozens of elementary and middle schools in the listening area, including Bay City, Beaverton, Clio, Gladwin, Midland, Saginaw and Standish. Students committed to fight bullying through signed pledge forms and some students formed groups to develop their own anti-bullying program. Public Media staff members also gave presentations at the schools throughout November. The Saginaw Spirit’s mascots, Sammy and Burt, even signed pledge forms.
Lauren Saj, station engagement coordinator, said the regional campaign plugged into PBS’ national campaign in October, which was National Bullying Prevention Month. The college’s website offers many educational resources for teachers and families.
