Citizen Activism in the Flint Water Crisis

February 16, 2022

Delta College is pleased to invite the community to a virtual event featuring Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha from 7-8:30pm Thursday, March 17. Her talk, titled “Citizen Activism in the Flint Water Crisis” will address the historical context for the Flint Water Crisis, as well as how citizens of the city came together to raise awareness and demand accountability.

Dr. Hanna-Attisha is a Hurley Children’s Hospital pediatrician whose work identifying elevated blood lead levels in Flint children helped expose the crisis. Her book, What Eyes Don’t See, documents the unfolding of the crisis and the government’s response. It grapples with the history of environmental injustice in the United States while telling the inspiring personal story of Dr. Hanna-Attisha, whose family roots in social justice activism inspire her work in Flint.

Dr. Hanna-Attisha’s talk will be moderated by students taking American politics classes at Delta College this semester.

“Dr. Mona embodies the power of citizenship in democracy,” said Lisa Lawrason, a political science professor whose students will be participating in the event. “I know her example of persistence, compassion and courage will inspire Delta students and other audience members to tap into their own potential to create change in their communities.”

“Citizen Activism in the Flint Water Crisis” is sponsored by The Democracy Commitment at Delta College, a campus-wide initiative to raise awareness, educate and empower students to enact positive change through social engagement and citizenship.

This free event can be accessed on Zoom, but registration is required. Go to delta.edu/DrMona to register. For more information contact Lisa Lawrason at 989-686-9509 or lisalawrason@delta.edu.
