On Friday, March 4 at 2pm the Delta College Planetarium will premiere the award-winning
production “Big Astronomy: People, Places, Discoveries,” a new feature show about the world’s largest observatories in South America and
the people who run them.
The program travels to three world-class observatories in Chile’s rugged Andes Mountains and arid Atacama Desert—remote, extreme regions with the perfect conditions for astronomical research. Along the way, audiences meet an inspiring cast of astronomers, engineers, technicians and support staff who keep these mega-machines running.
“When we think of big astronomy, we tend to think of big telescopes,” explains Mike Murray, Planetarium Manager. “But it’s the people who make the discoveries! It takes a team of people with diverse backgrounds, talents and skills, working under unique sky conditions, to make a world-class observatory succeed.”
The planetarium begins an expanded schedule in March, with different titles playing on Wednesday through Saturday afternoons. Among those, family-friendly programs play every Wednesday and Saturday at 2pm. Full program information is available at www.delta.edu/planetarium.
