Delta College Celebrates Black History Month

February 1, 2023 

On Wednesday, February 15 from 12-1:30pm in room J131, Dr. Pam Ross McClain will host a discussion entitled, “Racial Identity, Intersectionality, and the 10 Cultural Lenses” as a part of the history department’s “Celebrating Our Stories” initiative and “Brown Bag” talk series.

Attendees may bring their lunch and engage with Dr. Ross McClain for an autoethnographic exploration of racial identity development, learning about racial identity theory, intersectionality, and Mark Williams' “The 10 Lenses: Your Guide for Living and Working in a Multicultural World” plus receive tools to examine their social identities, privilege, and power.

 The presentation is free and open to the public.

  • Follow the “Celebrating Our Stories” Facebook page for daily information at www.facebook.com/celebratingourstories and learn of local events, share your stories, and learn about prominent African Americans in history. Black History Month related stories will be share on the radio program “Historia,” which airs on Tuesdays at 7:30am and 9:30am. For more information, contact history@delta.edu. 

Celebrating Black Historical Leaders
Every day in February from 11am-1pm

  • Black Historical leaders, thinkers, and inventors have made incredible impacts on our personal lives. As a result, there are no shortage of Black historical figures to learn about and celebrate.

Who Is the Man Behind Black History Month?
Wednesday, February 1 from 11am-1pm

  • Learn about the individual who made it possible: Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950). Woodson dedicated his life to educating African Americans about the achievements and contributions of their ancestors. 

Trivia Contest
Thursday, February 9 at 12pm

  • Come test your knowledge with Black History Month themed trivia games. Win prizes!

Black History Month Theme
Wednesday, February 15 from 11am-1pm

  • The 2023 theme is Black Resistance: an exploration how African Americans have resisted against historic and ongoing oppression in all forms. Delta College will provide historical information and Black History milestone topics.

Create a Playlist
Thursday, February 23 from 11am-1pm

  • For decades, Black artists have created and shaped many genres of music including Rock ‘n’ Roll, blues, hip-hop, gospel, and more. Let’s recognized Black History Month with a student-created playlist in celebration where participants may add their music and listen while it is showcased. 

 All Student and Civic Engagement (SACE) coordinated events will take place in the Lower West Student Lounge on the Main Campus and the lounges at the downtown Saginaw and downtown Midland locations.
