President Gavin wins prestigious Phi Theta Kappa award

February 24, 2023

Delta's fifth president, Michael Gavin.

Dr. Michael Gavin, Delta College president, has been chosen as a winner of the Paragon President award by the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society.

The award recognizes new college presidents for their outstanding support of student success and for providing high-quality learning environments inside and outside the classroom. Phi Theta Kappa nominates college presidents and campus CEOs to honor leadership that champions student success.

As Delta's fifth president, Gavin began his duties in the fall of 2021 with a central goal to ensure no gaps in equity and completion for students and to provide a place for inclusivity.

"I am deeply honored to receive this prestigious recognition from the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for my efforts to elevate the experience for our students and community here at Delta College." Gavin said. "To be nominated by our students is even more meaningful."

Brittani Thornton, a general management student and Vice President of the Hallmark Awards for Phi Theta Kappa, nominated Dr. Gavin because of his commitment to the future of the college. She praised him as a "welcoming presence on campus" to Delta's faculty and students.

"Dr. Gavin is an asset to Delta College because he is open and transparent with Delta's faculty and students. He has demonstrated service to the college community and student success through his dedication and support," Thornton said. "He makes it a point to be present as much as possible and engages with the community one-on-one."

Gavin will be honored during the Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Convention in April in Columbus, Ohio. The guest speaker of the event is two-time Academy Award winner, Geena Davis.

Established in 1918, the mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize the academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders.
