The Delta College Planetarium and Learning Center in downtown Bay City will host a free public event on Friday, April 7 from 6:30 to 10pm to celebrate the Second Annual Statewide Astronomy Night. The event represents a partnership of planetariums, museums and observatories across the State of Michigan who have coordinated a special evening to enjoy presentations and activities that reveal the wonders of the night sky.
The Planetarium will feature special shows about stargazing, telescopes and hot topics in astronomy. Included will be hands-on activities for children and a telescope demonstration. Programs will make use of the Dome360 Theater, lobby and Space Explorers Hall. Weather permitting, audiences can explore the real sky with telescopes from the planetarium’s rooftop observation deck beginning at 9pm.
A special feature of the event will be a sky-friendly lighting presentation to demonstrate how better outdoor lighting can improve safety, cost-effectiveness and the environment through modern fixtures. Such measures have encouraged the designation of Dark Sky Preserves at State Parks throughout Michigan, including the International Dark Sky Park at the Headlands near Mackinaw City which is also participating in the event.
Statewide Astronomy Night is coordinated by the Michigan State University Science Festival in East Lansing. The Festival is a multi-day series of events that highlight science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Special events are held across the state and features talks, demonstrations, tours, open houses, guest speakers, and hands-on activities for lifelong learners of all ages. Information about all festival activities can be found at sciencefestival.msu.edu or by calling 517-353‑8977.
