Delta College’s Surgical First Assistant Program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), and is one of only two in the State of Michigan and ten in the nation to be awarded this accreditation.

“Delta started the program because the hospitals in our area have a need for employees with these advanced skills,” said Rebecca Hall, Instructor and Program Coordinator.

First Assistants are educated to specifically work in the operating room to provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, wound closure and other intraoperative technical functions which help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.

The Surgical First Assistant program is the next step in education for Surgical Technologists, and Delta’s certificate program offers some experiences that make it unique.

“I believe our First Assistant program is one of the best,” Hall said. “In addition to customary education, we offer comprehensive training in suturing, as well as laparoscopic practice with our laparoscopic trainer, advanced surgical anatomy preparation with the digital Anatomage cadaver table, casting and stapler knowledge, trocar placement training for the daVinci robot and a hands-on workshop in endo vein harvesting.”
