Spirit of MLK Award

Veronica BondVeronica Bond, Delta College Business Services Specialist, is the 2018 recipient of the College’s Spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. Award.

The award is sponsored by Delta’s Black Faculty and Staff Association. Members annually select a Delta College employee whose service to the institution and community exemplifies the spirit of Dr. King’s work and values.

Bond was born and raised in the city of Saginaw. She attended Saginaw public schools, graduating from Arthur Hill High School. In the fall of 1983, she enrolled in Delta College and received her Associate Degree in Business Studies in 1986.

Shortly after becoming a student at Delta College she applied for a student worker job. Veronica soon became a full-time switchboard operator. During her thirty-one years at Delta she has worked in the Purchasing Department and is currently the Accounts Payable Specialist in Business Services. She has served as a Delta shared governance representative, on Support Staff Fall Conference Committee and the Support Staff Excellence Award Committee.

Bond is a member of New Faith Temple Church where she serves as the van driver, choir director and a church administrator. Veronica is a mother of two daughters, Kirsten and Drashawn. She enjoys reading the Bible, and listening to audio books and music. However, she says the moments most precious to her is the time spent with family and friends.

Bond will receive the prestigious award at the 22nd Dr. Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Luncheon on Monday, January 15, 2017 at the Dow Event Center Unity Hall. The Saginaw chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Delta College's Black Faculty and Staff Association annually co-sponsor the King luncheon. Dr. King was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. The program begins at 11am. The Unity March will begin at 9:45am at the intersections of Franklin and Hayden Streets in Saginaw and will proceed to the Dow Event Center.

“Veronica Bond is a woman of valor that shines in any situation she is in,” said Carlos McMath, co-vice president of the Delta College Black Faculty and Staff Association. “Similar to Dr. King, Ms. Bond embodies the ideology of letting her good works leave a footprint of accountability and servitude that words can never express. Ms. Bond’s ultimate selflessness is a key reason she was selected as the 2018 recipient of the College’s Spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. Award.”
