Delta College has recently made some major upgrades to its Journalism & Integrated Media program, resulting in a complete revamping of the program. Now it more efficiently matches the skills needed in today’s job market. With a job outlook that is expected to grow in the next ten years, this program is a great one to enroll in if journalism is the career you wish to pursue.

"Our award-winning journalism faculty and student-run media outlets offer unique opportunities for students in the Journalism and Integrated Media program," says Crystal McMorris, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Journalism & Integrated Media program at Delta.

Many of the students that enroll in Delta’s Journalism program find jobs with the award-winning Delta Collegiate student news organization, while they are taking classes. The organization has been around since Delta was established in 1961 and has been recognized as the Number One in General Excellence in community colleges in Michigan, by the Michigan Community College Press Association (MCCPA). The Delta organization hires students for multiple different areas of journalism such as editing and photography.

If you enroll in the Journalism & Integrated Media program at Delta, you will experience engaging classes that include Mass Media, Photojournalism, News Writing, Media Ethics, and Social Media & Communication. This career field also will open up several different career outlets for you, such as jobs as a reporter, social media specialist or a multimedia journalist.

"Students study journalism basics and also specialize in News and Information, Visual Journalism, or Public Relations," says McMorris. "The associate in applied arts degree culminates in a real-world journalism setting, with students creating content for student media, community-based companies or on-campus collaborative projects."

Three-Track Program

Delta now has a three-track program that will help you to learn more about aspects of journalism like writing and photography and work with the latest technology in areas such as virtual reality, mobile apps, 360-degree photography and social media.

The three-track program focuses on three areas of study that deal with the journalism field and they are News and Information, Visual Journalism, and Public Relations. All of the tracks are geared toward helping you gain valuable experience and knowledge in different areas of journalism. The program builds up to a capstone experience with either an internship or involvement in the Media Innovation Lab. With the Media Innovation Lab, students obtain real world experience, working on collaborative projects with other students for a real audience or client.

"Students have the opportunity to begin building their professional portfolios of published work," says McMorris. "On-campus employment, off-campus internships and multi-media class projects give students the hands-on experience that prepares them for jobs or further study in the exciting field of journalism."
