Attention Job Seekers!

In order to make the most of your time meeting with potential employers, it is important to be prepared. Check out these resources to prepare you for the job fair!

Where do I start?

First, check out "Employers attending the event" below. Look up some of the companies online to do some research. Do any of them stand out as a place you would like to work?

Is my résumé professional enough?

It is a good idea to maintain and update your resume. Having a polished resume can sometimes make or break your odds of getting the job! Here are some resources to bring your resume up to par:

  • Michigan Works! workshops
Attend an in person, online, or pre-recorded workshop to improve your resume, interview skills, or prepare for the job fair.

  • On campus help
Delta College now has a partnership with MI Works. They can help you create or update your resume.

  • Big interview
Don't be fooled by it's name. Big Interview offeres way more than interview tips (but you might need that too!) This online resource offers training in resume and coverletter preparation.
When should I show up?

Arrive early! Get the lay of the land and locate what employers you want to prioritize talking to. Keep an open mind for organizations you are unfamiliar with. They might have something perfect for you!

I have nothing to wear!

Want to look your best for the job fair, but don't have anything to wear? Check out Delta's Closet! Delta College students can shop free at the on-campus retail store that provides gently used, professional clothing, at no cost to you.

So, what do I say?

Come up with a brief introduction of yourself. Include some of your past, positive work experience or skills, what you like about the company, and why you would be interested in that company. You are marketing for yourself!

Side note: don't bring up salary or benefits at this point unless they talk about it first.

Then what?
Did employers tell you how to apply for positions you were interested in? Follow up and apply! If you have a recruiter's business card, let them know you submitted a job application- this shows you really do follow through!
SUCCESS TIP: Silence the cell.

Make sure you are ready to impress potential employers by limiting distractions during your interaction with employers. Getting a phone call or hearing your phone go off from yet another group chat can interupt that critical conversation you were having with an employer.

The Great Lakes Bay Job Fair is a partnership between Delta College, the Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works!, the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity - Michigan Rehabilitation Services &  Workforce Development - Veterans’ Employment Services , and the American Legion Post #443.
